October 2019

October has been a mixed month with some really awful weather, Basil getting a swollen leg and then having his teeth done.  Unfortunately, its likely he is going to have to go to the vets for some more work on his teeth.  Basil hasn't been on the trailer since his last vet visit in 2015 so I will be spending the next month getting him used to it again in case. Tommy was so good for the vet to do his teeth, I am very proud.

Looking back at our riding this seemed like a bit of a 'holding' month as we have made no progress but I have managed to keep riding so he hasn't had too much time off.  They have both been enjoying the apples which I have collected from the trees - I still have so many.

This is how October looked:

1^st – rode in the arena and Basil was a bit spooky because the fence has really started to fall over in the corner.  We did lots of walk and trot circles and some leg yield spirals in walk, very pleased. 

4th – lunged today, he was a bit silly but stayed on the circle.

5th - hack today, lovely morning - very good :)

6th - arena this morning, now I have fixed the fence.  Some nice walk and trot serpentines and a quite good canter on the right rein, we managed the correct lead first time today.  Bit  nappy on the left rein today but picked up the correct lead (more by luck) on the first go.  Slightly out of control canter to begin but settled to just being his usual fast canter!

Basil's near fore is swollen above the fetlock.

15th - lunged today as Basil's leg seems better - he now has a new splint.  He was loopy for at least 10 minutes to start with but then settled and we had a good session.

18^th – lunged again today and he was better, it was a bit windy though.

19th - hack out today, not too far just to check Basil is totally sound and he seemed fine.  

20^th – hack again and Basil was very good.

Vet for Basil's teeth.  Seemed very sore afterwards :(

23rd - lunged today so that Basil didn't have his bit in as he still seems a bit sore, very good.

Rain 

27th - hack again and we met 2 horses today which is unusual.  It always makes Basil more keen and get a bit speedy but he was good.  Lovely sunny day today.

28th - another hack on another lovely day and Basil was very good.

29th - lunged, bit silly in the middle but mostly fine.  First trailer practice today, 2 front feet on ramp.

30th - rode in the arena today.  Just walk and trot as he was feeling very fresh today.  Lovely walk leg yield but as soon as we tried in trot he kept wanting to canter.  2 front feet on the ramp again today.
