Burmese - a great horse!
Burmese
was the Queen's horse, a beautiful black mare gifted to her by the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
Born
in 1962 in Saskatchewan, Canada, Burmese
was bred to be part of the RCMP. She was
much liked and was the lead horse for their musical ride by the time she was 5
years old. In 1969 the RCMP were to
perform at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, with Burmese. The Queen was looking for a new riding horse
and on hearing this the RCMP offered Burmese as a gift.
Burmese
spent a few weeks with Corporal Fred Rasmussen being trained for the
Queen. She went on to be ridden for
ceremonial displays in addition to country hacks, both by the Queen.
The
Queen rode Burmese for the Trooping of the Colour for 18 consecutive
years. In 1981 the Queen was shot at by
someone in the crowd (they were blanks), Burmese was unnerved but the Queen
calmed her quickly.
Burmese
retired in 1987 and she was turned out to grass at Windsor Castle for the rest
of her days. She died in 1990 and is
buried at Windsor. The Queen
commissioned a bronze statue of her riding Burmese which is in front of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building in Canada.
